No Surprise

Monday, October 17th, 2011

The Media across the Tarheel State acts surprised over the NC Education Lottery’s “supplanting, not supplementing” state K-12 education spending.  NC “now spends less on Education than in 2005″ when the lottery began.  Education’s share of the “education lottery” is now at 29% when it was promised 35%.

This is a sad story on so many levels.  First, lotteries are no more than a “poor man’s tax”.  It preys on the ignorant and the seeker of easy riches.  To disguise it as an “education” lottery was criminal.  The way it was shoved through the state legislature was criminal; and the 2 GOP legislators that stayed home so it could pass should live in eternal infamy.

Then, the Democrats’ spending spree of the last decade had to come to an end, and it did when the economy bottomed out in 2008-09.  Gov. Easley was good to teachers, but he probably went to far too fast fiscally.  A lottery is not the way to fund public education.  The GOP since gaining control of both state houses of legislature have moved back to fiscal sanity in balancing the state budget and attempting to reduce taxes.  Yes, the cuts were deep and were bound to hurt, but they are inevitable in light of the economic downturn.

Time will tell whether the GOP-led legislature’s decision are right.  They deserve a breathing spell to right the fiscal ship after being out of power since Reconstruction.  If Gov Bev Perdue can be replaced next year, the Republicans can go further in balancing the budget and installing positive incentives to grow the business climate in the Old North State.

Judge Manning, Back Off!!

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

In the Tarheel state, the GOP took over the state House and Senate in 2010 for the first time since Reconstruction ended.  Their work in 2011 was mixed, but it definitely had a conservative slant.  They cut the budget, balancing it, and dropped a temporary penny sales tax that had lasted several yrs.

The education system did take some cuts on the state level, but they could be made up for on the county levels where needed (as they should be, if you believe the best govt is the closest level to the people themselves).  Our former governor, Mike Easley (D) had started a More At Four program funded at the state level.  Education scores have not really changed since it was put into place.  It was another way to get ahold of kids by the State at an earlier age. Further, it took the place of poor people paying for childcare.

The new Legislature w/ veto-proof majorities slashed the funding for More At 4 to the bone, and did override the new governor’s (Bev Perdue -D) veto.  Well, you would have thought pedophiles had been hired to run daycares with the reaction of the Judges and newspapers.  Wake County Superior Court Judge Howard Manning Jr (a Republican) in a Sept 2 ruling, announced the program must be financially “uncapped” and “open to more children” particularly those in poverty.

In the Seventies, public school was funded grades 1st to 12th. Kindergartens were generally private schools. Then the state began funding K-12.  Guilford county, and others probably, fund a potential yr at Guilford Tech for students meeting certain graduation requiremts.  Now the state believes it is necessary to fund K4 to 12.  Private preschools can do just as much as More At Four, and if your family income doesnt allow you to put your child in such a private program– TOUGH!!  There is not enough tax revenue to fund state-run preschool programs.

When is enough enough for Statist Liberals??  K4, K5, free breakfast, free lunch, summer free lunch?   Do the recipients of these programs pay county property taxes?  Do they pay a fair share in state income taxes??  A pre-school program cannot be ‘constitutionally’ a guaranteed right?  Activist judges and liberal politicians must be stood up to.  Hard-working tax-payers must not continue to be forced to finance this kind of madness…  Judge Manning Back Off!

Victory For Life In NC

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Time will tell whether the GOP tidal wave victories in the NC Legislature in 2010 improve the state’s economy, education system, and general welfare– but no one can say they didnt work hard in 2011.  The party gained large majorities in both houses. Democrat Gov Bev Perdue vetoed more legislation this year than any other governor in state history.  The legislature reconvened in a short summer session to attempt to override several of her vetoes.

Aug 2nd brought a major victory for pro-life forces in NC. State Sen Stan Bingham (R-Davidson), the only Republican to vote against a bill to establish a 24 hr waiting period before an abortion, walked out of the chamber w/o issuing a vote allowing the override to carry.  The Liberal Media Rags were quick to disparage his lack of courage on the motion.

In addition to the 24 hr waiting period, the law requires the abortion providers to provide an ultrasound w/ a detailed description.  What pray tell is wrong with that?  Yes, Abortion is legal in the US and in NC, but that doesnt make it right, moral, or ethical.

The Liberal wants to corrupt traditional marriage, eradicate Biblical societal relationships, and then murder unborn children that are the result of their unholy cultural experiments.  For new parents and grandparents, you know the joy associated w/ seeing the ultrasound pictures. There in the womb is a little baby w/ fingers and toes. Eyes, ears, and nose. W/i 4 months, the Dr can tell you the sex.  This troubled woman or couple should see and know what they are destroying before the CHOICE they agree to.  They should discuss options: adoption primarily before committing to abortion.

The worst governor in the last half century in NC has been thwarted again, and this time it is a Victory For Life….

Some Things To Think About From Civitas

Monday, September 14th, 2009

*  NC ranked 39th in business climate before new 2009-10 taxes, according to the non-partisan Tax Foundation.  Our neighbors rank: Virginia 15th, South Carolina 25th, and Georgia 27th.
*  Since 2004, NC budget spending has outpaced the rate of inflation plus population growth by $9 billion.  Since 1996, state budgeted spending per person has risen by 25% even after adjusting for inflation.
*  In the NC State Legislature, sexual orientation is protected in a so-called “Bullying” bill while the Defense of Marriage Act cannot even be debated in committee.
