Back To Basics On War: Sun Tzu

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

Sun Tzu wrote the Book on Strategy in War; through a combination of Discipline & Hardness & Obedience he saved the Kingdom of Wu’s independence.  He preferred an Army 10 times the size of a neighbor to be able to face them.  Its definitely time to re-examine his precepts as we slog thr. 10 yrs in Afghanistan and 8 yrs in Iraq.

1) Know your enemy and know yourself : in 100 battles, you will never be in peril

2) To win 100 battles is not the height of skill; to subdue the enemy w/o fighting is

3) Avoid what is strong. Attack what is weak

4)  It is essential for Victory that generals are un-constrained by their leaders…  *My Favorite: think of Grant & Sherman, Patton & MacArthur*

5) The winning Army realizes the conditions for Victory 1st, then fights.  The losing Army fights 1st– then seeks victory.  *Deja vu in Iraq all over again*

6) No Nation has ever benefited from prolonged War:  Preparation/ Deception/ Indirect Attacks

#6 Think American Revolution, Vietnam 1954-1975, Afghanistan 1979-1989, 2001-2011***

Credit Where Credit Is Due

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Bob Woodward’s new book, Obama’s War , is out and w/ it the news that the Military Brass is trying to “push” the Presidt around.   This phenomona  should not be surprising nor is it new.  From Little Mac & Lincoln to MacArthur in Korea to JFK’s 13 Days in October ‘62, that has been the standard operating procedure. Only one in three of those examples was the Brass right and even then he was being insubordinate.

Obama rejected the military’s request for 40,000 troops as part of another “surge” like the one in Iraq.  “I’m not doing 10 yrs”, he reportedly told Sec of Defense Robt Gates and Secof state Hillary Clinton.  “I am not doing long-term nation-bldg….”   He allowed 30,000 eventually, but “stressed that the plan ‘ needs to be… about how we’re going to hand it off and get out of Afghanistan…. get to the point where we can reduce our footprint… There cannot be any wiggle room.’”

As a Patriot, as a defender of liberty here and abroad- these types of issues gnaw at one’s soul.  There are two ways two look at this story:

Intellectual Liberals are Military Haters from way back. Clinton was a draft dodger who protested the Vietnam War in Russia.  Obama has been friends with Marxists who despise the Capitalist Economy and Anglo-dominated culture of America.  The president is “at odds” w/ Adm Mike Mullen (Chmn Joint Chiefs) and Gen Petraeus (CentComCO). Petraeus was demoted to CO in Afghan. after Gen McChrystal was fired for making degrading comments on Obama & his staff.  Natl Security Advisor James L Jones, ret. USMC, referred to Obama’s aides in the Woodward book as “water bugs”, “the Politburo”, and the “Campaign Set”.  Even Richard Holbrooke, special rep. for Afghanistan & Pakistan is “quoted as saying Obama’s strategy ‘can’t work’ in the book according to the NY Times review.”

Gates served Bush after Rummy was pushed out. and stayed on to “finish” these wars and reform the Defense Dept (according to a new Newsweek story).  Jones is a Marine, and a good one.  You have to think he wants to win these wars.  Petraeus was successful in Iraq as definitions go, and has to want victory to save his reputation.  Americans, George Patton said, love a winner; and they hate a loser when he quits.  MacArthur understood this concept in Korea where Truman settled for a “tie”.  America was attacked on Sept 11, and we went to war in Afghanistan to destroy al-Quaida and topple the Taliban regime.  Presidt Bush took his eyes off the prize too soon and sent troops into Iraq to settle old scores having little or nothing to do w/ Sept 11.  Saddam is dead and his regime has been replaced w/ a fragile democracy. Will it last? God only knows.  Bet on Iran trying to fill the vacuum left when Americans leave that country (somewhere far down the road, regardless of the presidt).  al-Qaida is now in Pakistan and maybe Yemen.  The Taliban fight on as Afghans did against the Russians, the British, Alexander the Great, and the Mongols.  It is an untamed wilderness land.

Give Obama credit where credit is due.  Declare victory in Iraq; make it clear to Iran to butt out, and bring our troops home.  Training bases there will remain like those still in Germany, Japan, and Korea.

Holbrooke is CFR which infiltrates both parties and designs doctrines of future World Govt with a socialistic economy and the loss of American constitutional liberties.  The Brass are in bed w/ the Military Industrial Complex that Presidt Eisenhower warned of.  When JFK whispered about dismantling the CIA and bringing military advisors home from Vietnam he wound up dead in Dallas.    Johnson played ball in Vietnam and it cost him his presidency.  Nixon expanded the war before recognizing China and moving to “peace w/ honor” .  In reality, unilateral withdrawal and the collapse of S Vietnam.  The country never could stand on its own from the beginning.  Reagan “played ball” in Lebanon, Granada, Nicaraugua, and Afghanistan.  The MIC made $ from those adventures although much of it seemed patriotic and in support of national security.  Even Clinton played the game in Somalia though badly, and with impolitical strikes in Tanzania, Kenya, and Iraq.  He entered a European battleground in Yugoslavia. And now, Obama- as far left as any presidt we’ve had, is pushed around to fight wars w/ no end in sight and no definition for victory.

Give him credit, he seems to be trying to stand up to the MIC, not an easy or safe task.  Read Petraeus’ quote:  “You have to recognize also that I dont think you win this war. I think you keep fighting. Its a little bit like Iraq, actually… This is the kind of fight we’re in for the rest of our lives and probably our kids lives.”

Can you imagine Grant or Sherman saying that; what about Patton or MacArthur??  No , neither can I….

The Presidt is going to withdraw troops from Afghanistan beginning next summer God willing, and end this nat’l nightmare. He is moving in the right direction w/ increased drone attacks on the Pakistan side of the border to destroy al-Qaida. He has authorized the CIA to build a 3,000 man Afghan para-military force to conduct operations there in-country. This seemed to be the best strategy all along:  small CIA and special forces units working w/ Aghans who know the terrain using guerrilla tactics while striking with drones using satellite intel.  This is “modern” warfare at its best.  Give credit where credit is due…..

Obama’s Pals Hate War Policies

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Candidate Obama made brash promises to end the war in Iraq, finish the war in Afghanistan, and close GITMO immediately. BUT, President Obama has found each of these more difficult to accomplish.  If you read previous articles here, you see the mixed feelings on Iraq I now have.  Was it necessary to dismantle al-Qaeda?  Probably not. The world should be glad Saddam is dead and his sons as well.  But if a Shiite dominated Iraqi govt tilts toward Iran, that is not good.  GITMO should be closed, but only after every ounce of intel is drained from its prisoners and then all are executed by firing squad or public hanging.  The war in Afghanistan was the Dems’ and the president’s “acceptable” war–  the home of the Taliban Radical Muslims who allowed al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden refuge and training facilities.

But, if the primary mission was to topple the Taliban regime,  destroy al-Qaeda as a viable terrorist organization,  and kill bin Laden and his lieutenants responsible for the September 11 attacks,  then let’s get the bulk of the troops out- declare victory- and use special ops and air power to finish off bin Laden.  al-Qaeda has been disrupted been it has not been eradicated, they will continue to recruit and plan ops around the world.  bin Laden has been in the crosshairs several times dating back to the Clinton years, but he continues to exists.

Why doesn’t Obama, the Far Leftist ideologue, end these wars?  His Leftist friends who helped him win the White House loathe the Military and our nationalist patriotism to a country they see as meddling, selfish, racist,  and evangelically patronizing.  The answer I am beginning to see is difficult to comprehend.  It is like an enormous puzzle that we watch as pieces are dropped into place.  It is impossible to know everything that goes on in countless governmt agencies and private organizations, but there seems to be two powerful groups working toward the single goal of ruling the US outside the boundaries set by the Constitution.   Although they work from opposite poles, their ideologies often overlap.

The thesis is this, and time will tell:  The Far Left Marxists-Socialists ideologues control vast areas of the Democrat Party; in Academia; and the Mainstream Media.  Through our schools, universities, local urban governments, state legislatures, and Congress, the Leftist domestic agenda proceeds incrementally.  It began in theory with the Wilson administration and gained influence w/ FDR’s New Deal w/ the onslaught of the Great Depression.  LBJ’s Great Society furthered the process and no one has had the guts to derail it since (though Reagan tried harder than all the others).  But when the candidate of the Left gains the White House (since the Cold War), they too run head-on into the neo-Fascist Military Industrial Complex.  Regardless of the party in power in the White House, the MIC reigns supreme in US foreign policy decisions.

The US defeated Mexico in 1 1/2 yrs; Spain in 90 days; finished off the Kaiser in 1 1/2 yrs; and defeated the Nazis and Japan in less than five yrs.  Since then (after Eisenhower warned of this entity’s sinister influence), we fought North Korea to a draw; could not “save” South Vietnam or Cambodia;  and left Saddam in power after he invaded Kuwait, gassed innocent people, and threatened to kill the President.  The MIC needs an enemy, a boogie man to scare Americans into accepting their “defense” spending levels and neo-imperialist operations: the Russian Bear and Communism, “Humanitarian” efforts (Reagan and Lebanon; Clinton and Somalia; Clinton and Yugoslavia), now “Terrorism” (Bush II and Obama), and soon Iran for Obama.

Radical Islam is a dreadful threat to world peace and our personal well-being. A nuclear Iran  is not acceptable with the present apocalyptic-minded type of government in control there.  Communism by its very internationalist ideology was a threat to be faced.  I am not attempting to make light of these adversaries.  As the Left’s domestic agenda is anathema to America’s traditional constitutional foundations, so also is the fear-mongering of the Internationalist Financier- backed Military Industrial Complex.  Obama and his crowd of Marxists, closet Muslims, and Black Liberation Theologians, cannot wrench free of the wars, increased military spending, and domestic spying, because they like the dirty money and feel of power they get from the MIC.  They are like the Pharisees in Jesus’ day. The Jewish Pharisees turned over the Messiah to the Roman authorities, murdering their potential King and damning their souls, to hold on to the miniscule amount of authority they held within the Roman empire system.

If you love Liberty, understand what America faces from Right and Left, from the Establishment which controls both major parties, and stand ready to defend our Biblical and constitutional values with the soap box, the ballot box, and if need be, the ammo box. Lord, have mercy on America.

ITS WAR, MR PRESIDENT !!!

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

As one who believes the power of the Military Industrial Complex (see Pres. Eisenhower’s Farewell Address) is real, I no longer will argue the merits of the War In Iraq.  Was it neo-imperialism; was it about oil; was it Wilsonian nation-building; or, was it W’s revenge for Saddam’s threats on Poppy???  Who knows??  There is money made in War Financing and Arms Contracts and you have to have an Enemy to have a war. Beyond that, all the above could be true.  But Afghanistan was different, and the recent related actions in the Pakistani border region and Yemen go further to prove that.

September 11, 2001 was a pre-meditated attack on American soil using civilian airliners to strike symbols of  American Business, the Military, and probably the Government.  While admiring much of Dr Ron Paul’s views on the size and scope of Government, these Muslim Extremists did not attack us due to American occupation of  Arab lands as he recently stated.  The US has provided economic and humanitarian aid to Somalia, Yugoslavia, and Indonesia. The US has risked the lives of American military personnel to protect American interests and peace-keeping efforts (some ill-conceived) in Lebanon, Kuwait, the Persian Gulf and Arabian peninsula, Afghanistan, and Iraq.  This Nation has not colonized any of these areas.  The US does not have public plans to permanently occupy any of these regions.  Those are not goals of the American Republic.

Al-Qaeda, Hizbollah, Islamic Jihad, Hamas, and like-minded extremists share a Radical Muslim ideology which is anti-democratic, anti-capitalist, anti-Semitic, and tyrannical– particularly against women.  These groups hate Israel and America as an ally of Israel.  They hate freedom-loving secular society.  They use a warped radicalized version of Islam to recruit jihadists to wage acts of terrorism on Israel, Europe, India, the US, and Muslim countries friendly to these infidel states. After small-scale attacks in the Eighties and Nineties, Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda declared war on the United States with the September 11 Attacks.  The radical Taliban sheltered the terrorist organization in Afghanistan, and so was subsequently toppled in the US invasion.  The Bush administration lost focus before bin Laden and his cohorts were rooted out and exterminated.  His jihadists burrowed deeper into the Pakistani border region. You can argue whether Iraq became a further front in that war, but the terrorists have struck targets in Pakistan, India, and become more heavily involved in Yemen.  The recent terror attack at Ft Hood was perpetrated by a jihadist Muslim US Army major who has ties with a radical mosque in Virginia and an internet imam in Yemen.  Then there was the near-miss Christmas attempt to blow up a civilian plane on a Holland to Detroit flight.  The radical Muslim Nigerian had been trained and equipped in Yemen by al-Qaeda.

All of the Sept.11 hijackers were Muslim Arabs;  The Ft Hood Army Major was a MuslimPalestinian; and the recent Nigerian was a radical Muslim as well.  His own father had warned the US State Dept in Nigeria of his son’s radical bent.  The would-be terrorist bomber 1)bought a one-way ticket; 2) paid cash; and 3) carried no luggage for the trip.  Here were four warnings that should have raised red flags in Nigeria and/or Holland.  These are stateless entities; the perpetrators are clearly religious-motivated guerrilla fighters; but make no mistake, Mr President, this is WAR.  The US Administration must acknowledge this reality and plan its strategies accordingly.

Military tactics from 1950s Korea to 60s-70s Vietnam and 90s-2009 in the Gulf and Afghanistan have been highly successful;  it is the geopolitical strategy level that has suffered. America wins battles but loses conflicts since WWII.  That is not the field soldier’s fault, its the politicians’.  Now, America finds itself in the hands of the most internationalist-minded chief executive in history. More so than Wilson, FDR, Truman, Carter, Bush I, and Clinton.  His Christian back-ground is Black Liberation theology.  His father and step-father were Muslims.  He was raised in Muslim tradition in Indonesia during his formative years.  If these men and CFR-dominated JFK, Nixon, Reagan, and Bush II administrations allowed America to drift geopolitically and economically toward socialistic internationalism, where will this president take the country in four years?  ITS A WAR, MR PRESIDENT; and the objective in war is victory!  Victory is achieved by defeating the enemy through destroying his ability to wage war.  When we wake up to this reality, America can become winners again.
