Open Elections: More Choices

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Political parties were probably inevitable, but the Founding Fathers didnt really see them as a positive influence when you read the Federalist Papers.  They formed relatively quickly after the Washington administration.  Hamilton’s central bank/ strong central Gov’t ideology clashed w/ Jefferson’s states’ rights/ weak central Gov’t views, and the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans were born.

The names changed through the years, but the opposing ideologies basically remained the same until after World War I.  The Great War was not enough of a threat to Americans to convince them to surrender sovereignty to a League of Nations. Henry Cabot Lodge led the Senate in defeating the Versailles Treaty in 1919.  Woodrow Wilson’s close advisor Col Edward House organized a group of political and business leaders from both major parties with a long term plan to move the United States toward integration in a World Government.  The Council on Foreign Relations went to work on achieving this goal. The deadlier and costlier WWII proved to be the catalyst to start the process as the United Nations was instituted and placed on American soil in 1945.

Southern Democrats once fought for states’ rights, but they are few and far between now in a party dominated by northeastern ultra-liberals; Ronald Reagan brought to fruition the seeds of Conservatism Barry Goldwater planted, but the GOP never used their years in power to undo the New Deal and Great Society. Do you wonder why big government incrementalism continues unabated regardless of the party in power since 1945?  The two major parties are ensconced with members of the CFR.  There are still good conservatives here and there, but the socialistic world gov’t ideologues control both parties.

The Democrat party, pro-abortion, pro-homosexual, anti-2nd amendmt, and weak-kneed in foreign policy, is hopeless for America’s future.  While disgusted with the GOP over the last five years, one can hope the recent grassroots movement to stop Cap and Trade legislation and Government-Run HealthCare builds momentum in 2010 and on to 2012.  The disgust with the GOP is due to their ranks being dominated by RINOs.  CONSERVATIVES- more Americans refer to themselves as conservative more than any other label.  GOP- 20%, Democrats 33%,Liberal- 15%, Conservative- 35%.  Less Gov’t, lower taxes, free-enterprise capitalism, individual responsibility- traditional conservatism is the answer for what ails us.  No more blind support for Republicans who act like Democrats or sellouts to the CFR. Sarah Palin made the right stand this week supporting the conservative party candidate in the 23rd NY House district race whereas Newt Gingrich blindly supported a pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, anti-2nd amendmt Republican in the race.

The two major parties in the US, dominated by the CFR, have control of the election process infrastructure.  In the state of NC, it is almost impossible to get third parties on the ballot.  Where do these parties get constitutional authority for freezing out other choices for elections across this republic? It is unethical and in violation of the founders’ spirit.  While no third party candidate has won the presidency, several have affected the outcome — 1824, 1860, 1912, 1968, 1992, and 2001.  I attended the NC Libertarian Party convention last April and came away impressed with the folks involved with it. Dr Mike Munger (of Duke University) got 3% of the votes in the NC 2008 gubernatorial race; Dr Mike Beitler (of UNCG) is currently running for the US Senate seat held by Richard Burr for 2010. These are good men worthy of support. They offer a fresh choice from the run of the mill professional politician.  While I cannot support all of the Libertarian social issue and foreign policy positions, I score a 90 on agreement w/ their economic platform. There is a Conservative Party which is strong in some states, but not currently organized in NC.   Maybe it has a future here as well.  It is time to press the NC Legislature to amend the elections process and allow greater third party or independent candidate participation.  The major party monopoly on the process must be broken to overcome their wrong-headed policies.

Missing Traditional American Politics

Monday, October 26th, 2009

I have a love/hate relationship when I read Thomas Friedman of the NY Times. Sometimes, he seems brilliant on foreign policy and political issues; and then, he swallows the whole line on global warming and Big Government intervention to fix this looming armageddon.  Early in October, he wrote a story lamenting the loss of traditional American politics.

Partisan politics is not new; they began with Jefferson and Hamilton opposing one another within George Washington’s first cabinet.  Read about the Adams-Jefferson campaigns (1796-1800)and those of the Age of Jackson (1828-40). They were brutal.  The difference, before 1992, was the President’s ability to deal with issues facing the Nation using the pronoun “we”.  Once an election is over, the President-elect is the leader of the whole republic not just the voters that put him in office. He has to rise above the natural fractionalization of congressional politics and govern for the good of the nation.  Americans have to be won over to believe he has their best intentions in mind.

As Friedman writes, ” ‘we’ have these huge problems- the national debt, the deficit, the recession, health care, climate change[sic] and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan- that ‘we’ can only manage, let alone fix, if there is a collective ‘we’ at work.”   The change in how America looks at the occupant of the White House began with the election of Bill Clinton.  Friedman ponders whether President Bush ‘41′ was our last “legitimate” president.  Upon reflection, Friedman seems right in his analysis.  The Right’s ‘politics of destruction’ was unleashed full bore on Clinton immediately after his election.  The Clintons’ small-fry Arkansas scandals and the president’s moral pecadilloes were like gasoline while the new up and rising conservative Media struck the match.  George W Bush was elected by a hair and had to be confirmed by a similarly hair’s width-conservative leaning Supreme Court.  The Left never let him forget it.  And that brings us to Barack Hussein Obama. The president’s citizenship (his father was Kenyan and his step-father was Indonesian); his choice of religion (Islam in Indonesia and radical Black-militantism under Rev. Wright); and ideological bent (friends with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, close ties with ACORN community organizers, and supporter of BigGovernment-Single-Payer Health Insurance) concertedly have led to an attack of his legitimacy by the Right.  These attacks come not only from Conservative Talk Radio and Fox, but from Lou Dobbs of CNN and outspoken members of the US House of Representatives.

Going back to Friedman’s conclusion, the answer is not to cease from attacking  the President’s politics; “politics is a tough business”, but can the country survive going “24 years w/o a legitimate president?”  Can political leaders make their cases in an intelligent manner to sway American opinion w/o stooping to use slander and innuendo to “paralyze the genius of our system”?  Can parties be honest w/ their platforms laying out plans for Americans to choose from to decide issues facing us and future generations?  The excesses cannot be fixed overnight, but Americans must pressure their political leaders to move back toward the traditional American political system.  Stricter limits on lobbyist money in campaigns; non-partisan drawing of political districts instead of equal-opportunity gerrymandering; equal access to ballots by third parties and independents to provide greater voter choice;  and an end to the permanent presidential campaign “that encourages all partisanship” would be the place to start.  The current system is unsustainable in the face of a growing list of deepening crises threatening our Republic.

MAD: Can It Work On Nations Run By Mad Men?

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Mutually Assured Destruction, or MAD, worked during the Cold War confrontation. While the Soviet Union was ideologically opposed to the United States and Western Europe, the Politburo dictators were not crazy. Soviet Russia developed satellite states across Eastern Europe and maintained them by force.  They aided communist movements from Latin America across Africa, the Middle East, and throughout Asia.  They had a vast arsenal of nuclear weapons, but they never used one. The United States and the Soviet Union understood that if either unleashed a first strike the other would retaliate in a massive response that assured mutual destruction of both civilizations; there would be no winner– only losers.   With time, several western nations acquired nuclear weapons; then India and Pakistan joined the elite club.  Israel most likely has them.

Pat Buchanan wrote last week, “Other countries that rely on nuclear power, Japan and South Korea, surely have the capability to produce an explosive device.  They have preferred life without nuclear weapons.  Will Iran also be content with this, knowing that if it explodes a device, the Saudis, Egyptians and Turks will follow, that Israel would put a hair trigger on its nuclear arsenal, that the United States would retaliate massively against Iran if any nuclear weapon were detonated by Islamic terrorists on American soil?”

Buchanan continues, “The sanctions road appears headed for dead end, or war.  As one steps back and looks at a decade of U.S. intervention and war in the Middle East, what has it all availed us?”  Economic sanctions have not seemed to faze Iran; and the West should remember the educated middle class of the ayatollah-dominated nation. They have not gotten over the tainted elections earlier this year that kept Ahmadinejad in office.  There is nothing like war to unite a country.

While American forces have overthrown Saddam Hussein, “the Shia who now run the country are moving away from us, and closer to Iran”, as we look to draw down our forces there.  Will Iraq remain quasi-democratic and pro-West? Afghanistan, after eight years, remains untamed and fraught with danger.  The Karzai government controls little more than the Kabul area.  Tribal leaders reign in the mountinous country.  The Taliban remain a force to be reckoned with.  If NATO pulls out and allows the Taliban to regain power, it will create a vacuum Al-Quaida will be glad to fill.

Sanctions escalation risks taking the US toward yet another war in the Middle East.  Do we have to play this game again?  Would another MAD policy work with Iran?  Can the mullahs understand blunt language?  Support Iranian pro-reformists and announce a policy of Assured Destruction if the mullahs use nuclear weapons against the West or Israel.  Do not trust the UN to get anything done; but, continue to pressure NATO states to deal with the nukes program.  Allow Israel the opportunity to defend itself without issuing a blank check on a pre-emptive strike.  The US cannot forsake its traditional relationship with Israel.  Can MAD work with a group of fundamentalist Islamic zealots who believe in an end-time prophetic battle  with the infidel West? No choice is easy.

Renewed Sense of Purpose: Volksgemeinshaft

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Senator Henry Cabot Lodge wrote in 1907, “I do not believe that this Nation was an accident.  I do not believe that it is the creation of blind chance.  I have faith that it has a great mission in the world– a mission of good, a mission of freedom.”

America was successful for generations as it had a great sense of purpose- a shared sense of community, Volksgemeinshaft.    Patriots stood together for Liberty in the Revolution; Manifest Destiny compelled Americans to settle the West; the United States has supported the cause of Freedom with its sweat and blood internationally since becoming a world power.  The United States was founded on the principles of Biblical morality and constitutional republican government.  Our heritage is rooted in Western Civilization, primarily of the Anglo-Saxon variety.  Our laws are derived from Christian theology and English is our official language.

Without a shared sense of purpose, a Nation begins to drift like a ship broken from its moorings.  Multiculturalism has proved a failure and destroyed nations from Rome to Austria-Hungary, from the Soviet Union to Yugoslavia and Czecho-Slovakia.  The American Republic must return to its traditional foundations in order to prosper again.  Read again Dr King’s speeches on a colorblind American society where all God’s creation have the opportunity to enjoy the liberties to keep the fruits of their labor as they build stable homes and communities.
